ABSTRACT Motion segmentation is an important problem in video processing and compression, and in computer vision. It is usually performed by either rst estimating a eld of motion parameters and then segmenting it, or by applying joint motion estimation and segmentation. Motion segmentation methods often constrain the set of possible solutions by forcing motion discontinuities to coincide with intensity discontinuities. In this paper, we propose an iterative method for joint motion estimation and segmentation that is based on level sets. The motion within individual segments is parametric and the method does not use the intensity discontinu-ity constraint, but is shown to be accurate for images with both synthetic and natural motion compliant with the assumed motion models.

Partial Differential Equations applied to Medical Image ‎Segmentation

‎This paper presents an application of partial differential equations(PDEs) for the segmentation of abdominal and thoracic aortic in CTA datasets. An important challenge in reliably detecting aortic is the need to overcome problems associated with intensity inhomogeneities. Level sets are part of an important class of methods that utilize partial differential equations (PDEs) and have been exte...

Joint optical flow estimation, segmentation, and 3D interpretation with level sets

This paper describes a variational method with active curve evolution and level sets for the estimation, segmentation, and 3D interpretation of optical flow generated by independently moving rigid objects in space. Estimation, segmentation, and 3D interpretation are performed jointly. Segmentation is based on an estimate of optical flow consistent with a single rigid motion in each segmentation...

Spatial/joint space-time motion segmentation of image sequences by level set pursuit

Segmentation of image sequences based on motion is an important problem with numerous applications in video processing (objectbased frame conversion) and video compression (MPEG-4) [1]. Motion-based segmentation can be carried out either on a frame by frame basis, resulting in a 2D spatial region segmentation in each frame of the sequence, or it can be carried out on a multi-frame basis, whereb...

Simultaneous Segmentation and Motion Estimation in 4D–CT Data Using a Variational Approach

Spatiotemporal image data sets, like 4D CT or dynamic MRI, open up the possibility to estimate respiratory induced tumor and organ motion and to generate four-dimensional models that describe the temporal change in position and shape of structures of interest. However, two main problems arise: the structures of interest have to be segmented in the 4D data set and and the organ motion has to be ...

4D Endocardial Segmentation Using Spatio-temporal Appearance Models and Level Sets

In this paper a framework for the segmentation of cardiac MR image sequences using spatio-temporal appearance models is presented. The method splits the 4D space into 2 separate subspaces, one for changes in appearance and one subspace for changes in motion. Using the 4D appearance models in combination with a level set framework combines the robustness of model based segmentation with the flex...
